Aan het oppervlak van in water gedompelde metaaldraden ontstaan corrosiestroompjes die door sommige vissoorten kunnen worden waargenomen. Dijkgraaf kende het werk van Parker en Van Heusen, die dit verschijnsel al in 1917 beschreven voor dwergmeervallen. In 1935 ontdekte hij zelf een soortgelijk verschijnsel bij haaien tijdens een onderzoekstage aan het Zee-Aquarium te Napels, maar schreef deze reacties toe aan de slechte toestand van het lichtnet aldaar. Pas in 1962 realiseerde hij zich, naar aanleiding van een publicatie van R.W. Murray, dat deze stroompjes door de ampullen van Lorenzini kunnen worden gedetecteerd.  Vanaf dat moment hield hij zich bezig met de vraag waartoe zulke zintuigen dienden. Immers, haaien hebben geen elektro-orgaan om schokken mee op te wekken? Meer over ampullen van Lorenzini....
